I went to Guitar Center over the weekend and bought a Seymour Duncan Performer Scorcher pickup to replace the bridge pickup in my $69 Kramer Focus. I was looking for the DiMarzio Fast Track 1 pickup, but they didn't have one. The performer pickup apparently is an OEM type pickup by Seymour Duncan that is made in Korea. It's supposed to be hotter than the Hot Rails pickup, and at $34.99 it's considerably cheaper, so I decided to try it.
I've never replaced a pickup before, and for some reason, the idea of doing that has always made me nervous. I keep thinking I'm going to destroy the guitar, which is why I wanted to try it first on the Kramer. That guitar has the sweetest neck I've ever felt, but the electronics are junky. Once I get confident that I know what I'm doing, I would like to replace all the pickups in my Squire Stratocaster.
I also stopped by Home Depot to pick up a soldering iron. I bought a Weller battery operated model, BP645MP, for $14.99. I liked the idea of having a cordless one, but it seems amazing to me that you can power a soldering iron with AA batteries. I hope it works!
I plan on doing the swap some time this week. Anything to prolong my procrastination on writing, I guess.
